Strengthening Covid-19 response systems in Zimbabwe
To boost the nation’s preparedness to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Save the Children donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) And Non-Food-items (NFIs) for use at hospitals and quarantine centres in Matobo and Beitbridge districts. The items which were donated under the European Union/ ECHO funded REACH project include sanitizers, face masks, latex gloves, liquid soap, disinfectants, aluminum plates, cups, buckets and bed sheets.
During a handover ceremony at Maphisa Hospital in Matobo, Head of Operations for Save the Children, Bhekimpilo Khanye thanked the Matobo community for the cordial working relationship with the organisation over the past years. He explained that the donation was in response to the request by the district to enable them to fight against Covid-19 pandemic.
Upon receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, Matobo District Development Coordinator, Obey Chaputsira expressed that the donation will go a long way in assisting the district.
"Through the donation, the hospital feels more empowered to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. To those who have received the gift please ensure it is used for its intended purposes. Thank you Save the Children for meeting us at our point of need.’’
Apart from the PPE and NFIs donated at the hospitals, Save the Children also donated sanitary pads and soap to young girls in the same district. Similar donations were made by REACH project implementing partners (Care International & World Vision) in Mwenezi and Mbire district.
