Ensuring Safety of Children in the COVID-19 Era

When her father passed away in 2018, McClean’s family was forced to move out of their house as they could not afford to pay rent. Since then her mother been struggling to provide for her five children, as well as send them to school. 10 year old McClean lives with her mother and siblings in Seke rural area which lies approximately 40 kilometres east of the capital city, Harare.

Impacts of Covid-19 on African Children

The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented with the virus spreading in almost all countries in the world. In Africa, all 54 out 55 countries have reported at least one COVID-19 infection. While confirmed COVID-19 cases on the continent remain relatively low- partly attributable to early and decisive action taken by many African governments as well as a youthful population – the COVID-19 pandemic has hit Africa hard, not only as a health crisis but also as a devastating socio-economic crisis that may persist over the months and years to come.

Educating Children around Zimbabwe about Covid-19 through Radio

A Save the Children sponsored radio programme called JuniorZi started airing on ZiFM Stereo recently. It focuses on informing and educating children about Covid-19, helping them understand the importance of adhering to prevention measures such as, hand washing and social distancing, respond to the Covid-19 questions from children, and ultimately help children to protect themselves.During the programme child friendly Covid-19 related messages are broadcasted, with the passcode for the children calling-in during the programme being #ProtectAGeneration.
